I think whichever visual novel you have become exposed to for the very first time will have a disproportionate emotional reaction compared to later ones. Based on my experience, after completing a few visual novels, I become used to how visual novels are structured and thus their emotional impacts become more diminished. I remember feeling depressed for a while after going through ''Crescendo'' and ''Kana Imouto'' a couple of years ago. (These two were my first two visual novels. In case of ''Crescendo'', Yuka's and Ayame's routes can be depressing, while in ''Kana Imouto'', 5 out of 6 routes result in Kana going kaput.) Had I read ''Katawa Shoujo'' as my very first visual novel, I would most likely to have become just as depressed after going through Hanako's route (also Rin's). Emi's route is the funniest in KS. Because she is the most active and outgoing, hers is also the most straightforward to get into and she is the easiest girl to understand. (Lilly is probably the second easiest, while Rin is the hardest.) I particularly liked the scene in which Emi asked about Hisao's English exam grade. 3 ... 2 ... 1 ... Emi revealed her score, but Hisao remained quiet. Emi then said something like, 'Evil! Evil! Evil! ...' :D Hanako's route will feel very different, so whatever emotional impact you have felt from Emi's route should not matter.
