In the story, Emi's mum gets a text from someone and she says she had to leave. We also learn that he works as a replacment father for Emi which proves that him and Emi's mum probably had something. Although, he could also be gay becuase when Hisao questions Emi's relationship with the track captain who we learn is gay, the nurse reassures him that he and Emi definetly don't have anything going on and when in the office and he made a joke to Emi saying let's quickly get our pants back on, she gets worried and barges in. I'm not sure which of these is true or not true...
