He wears his dark blue hair very long, as well as a Hawaiian shirt (that [[Hisao]] describes as "tacky"), and always carries a [[wikipedia:Katana|katana]] at his waist. Throughout Shizune's childhood, Jigoro was very stubborn and would refuse to learn sign language in order to communicate with his daughter, instead hiring interpreters and making her communicate in writing. He often boasts about his in-progress autobiography, and constantly complains about his biographer. Jigoro's attitude comes off as being that of an abusive father, but nothing is ever mentioned to confirm this. Also, he has possibly killed a bear and eaten its liver.

Jigoro Hakamichi (羽加道 地五郎 Hakamichi Jigorō) is the father of Shizune Hakamichi and Hideaki Hakamichi. He acts very antagonistic, insulting Hisao while boasting about his own superiority in a smug and mocking fashion.

Appearance[edit | edit source]

Jigoro is a muscular middle aged man who has dark blue hair that ends at his shoulders, dark-blue eyes and thick facial hair. Though his hair is long, his ears still stick out and the top of his hair sticks out wildly. He wears a blue Hawaiian shirt with white flower patterns (that Hisao describes as "tacky"), black trousers and has a large silver watch on his left wrist in addition to an unsheathed katana on the left side of his waist that he's always seen carrying.

Personality[edit | edit source]

Jigoro is the type of person who intially acts nice, only to quickly reveal himself to be blunt, insensitive, and rude. He is also quick to anger at anything that he sees as challenging his authority, such as Misha's loudness, as well as mocking towards his daughter's accomplishments, acting like her pride is wasted on things that "don't matter." This attitude leads Hisao to compare him to someone else he knows.

He expresses an overall disdain for younger generations, quick to belittle them for any of their accomplishments or faults (even made-up ones). This is shown through his constant insulting of Hisao's fashion sense (or insintuating that he sniffs glue) as well as his implied abuse of his children.

Jigoro has no qualms about using threat of physical violence to assert his authority, at one point even threatening to punch Hisao with brass knuckles. He constantly carries around a katana on his hip, though it is unknown if it is real or not.

Background[edit | edit source]

At an unknown point in time, he met and married Mayoi Satou, later conceiving two children with her: Shizune and Hideaki.

Throughout Shizune's childhood, Jigoro refused to learn sign language to communicate with her due to an entitled belief that she should conform to what he believes is "normal," instead of Jigoro adapting to having a disabled daughter. To that end, he hired sign language interpreters and/or made his daughter communicate through writing. It is also implied that he was physically and emotionally abusive to his family.
