It's interesting to me to see how many people (probably young people) didn't pick up on the subtext of the drunken Hanako scene.

First point: Lilly talks to Hanako, a lot more than Hisao does. Lilly knows that Hanako likes Hisao at this point and she more than likely after her conversation with him in the cafeteria suspects that Hisao likes Hanako as well.

Second point: Lilly is the one to suggest that Hisao instead of Akira take Hanako back to her room. Lilly is not dumb or naive and the game even tips you off because she gives a sneaky type smile at the couple as they leave. She is totally setting up her best friend to get some action.

Third point: Lilly is actually right (in this route Lilly is always right). If you get the good ending, then it's actually the physical intimacy between the two of them that forces them to confront their actual feelings. I don't think Lilly was hoping Hisao and Hanako would hump in the hall, but maybe she was hoping that they'd at least kiss or make out.

Fourth Point: The scene is actually supposed to demonstrate a big time Hisao fail. He is so obsessed with "white knighting" Hanako at this point that when she goes to hug him he keeps his arms at his sides. Like seriously - yes this girl is drunk, but what's wrong with hugging her on her birthday you fucking jackass? A real good guy would have given her a nice warm hug, an even better guy would have kissed her on the cheek and wished her sweet dreams.Instead Hisao just treats her like a live hand grenade. Way to build up her self esteem there Hisao, you creep.

That whole scene is just to demonstrate how stupid Hisao is. It's bad enough that he feels obligated to "protect her" from the big bad world all the time, but he treats her exactly how Hanako says he does in her bad end, like she's "fragile" and "broken".

Of course, if Hisao had half a brain, the route would have been even shorter than it was. He pretty much causes 80% of the problems.
