Honestly, 'Shards of Ire' was less of a bad ending than 'The World Only You Can See' to me, the latter being classified as a "neutral ending". It felt like in 'Shards of Ire' Hisao has some resolve and forms his own decision, whereas in 'The World Only You Can See', he just got deserted abruptly. 'Shards of Ire' gave me much more closure also.
