I love the design of this character, his element as the perfect foil to Shizune's dreams, how he has money but not success--for success is putting that money to good use (see Sneaking Mission)--and children without family--as he fails in many ways fatherly (thought not quite so badly as Lilly's!) clearly shapes Shizune's need to keep Misha, how Shizune looks forward (those two airplane trails!) and he looks backwards, commisioning an autobiographer to document a life nobody else seems interested in.  Jigoro's ambition bubbles outward into negativity and alternates unadmitted remorse (as seen in his gruff reconciliatory actions) with agressive naysaying, as Shizune attempts to escape that in the world of intense possibility that the school is presented as, to with every action of ambition create or heal, and to rise by virtue of virtue over the weakness of his strength.

Perhaps he sat the steps long ago?
